INSPIRATION

Both Susan and Diego have a great interest in contemporary art and architecture. On moving to Ireland from abroad in 1993, they initially lived in Dublin. When they both became freelance and started working from home, they decided they would leave the city and moved to the country with their children in 2000.

TYPE OF HOUSE

Modern, new build. Built 2001-2002.

POINT OF INTEREST

House designed to be a family home and an office for both Sue and Diego.

ECO ELEMENTS

Part green roof, Auro paints, double glazing, geothermal heating. ‘I do have some misgivings about the carbon foot print of the house, that was not taken very much into consideration at the design stage.

CREATIVE ELEMENTS

Susan had known Dominic when she lived in Berlin and when they bought a house in Dublin they commissioned him to design an extension for it. Pleased with the results, they approached him when they decided to move out of Dublin. They initially tried to find a house to buy but Dominic suggested building a house in Leitrim. They loved the landscape in Leitrim and had no difficulty in finding a site for their house. They were aware that Dominic would design something non-standard and that getting it built would be a challenge as the build would not have been previously tried and tested. Also, the expertise was not there for building such an unusual house which makes it more difficult to get it right. ‘It was not a difficult building but it was different.’
The shape of the house resembles a ‘clocher’ (group of houses) and the deep reveals around the window fit in with the vernacular.
The house needed to provide a comfortable home for them and their children, and a suitable environment in which to work. It has worked out perfectly for them on that level. They love being in their home and are happy working there.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Planning:   No problems – Dominic dealt with that
Time Scale:  2 years. Jan 2001 – Dec 2002.
Anything you would have done differently?:  Make the kitchen bigger.
Satisfaction Rating:  Quality of life in their house is great. Very happy with it. It may not be a house for life, however, as the alternating levels make it unsuitable for anyone with mobility problems.
