Green-Door - A Festival of Rural Architecture & Design

Green-Door Leitrim is a weekend of homes with sustainable features and ways of living, open to the public. It was held in 2011 and 2012 and we hope will be repeated in this space!!

In the meantime, if you have a home that it being built/ renovated/lived in that you think would suit being featured in the weekend, then please get in touch.

Green-Door Leitrim 2012 was held on Friday 14th-Sunday 16th September

Hundreds of people took to the lanes of Leitrim to visit the 35 homes and buildings featured in the Green-Door weekend. It was another huge success with great feedback form both home-owners and visitors. A full analysis of the festival is taking place and will be available on the website in the coming weeks; as will a slide show and some film footage (courtesy of Bandit films). The brochure is still available to download for those who would like to see a bit about the events that took place.

We opened on Friday 14th with a reception and debate at the Dock which certainly set the scene for the weekend, highlighting the importance of discussion around future-proof and environmentally sensitive building, design and living. The weekend that followed was then a packed series of events, tours, talks and visits and finished when the last cyclists arrived back into Dromahair village.

Thanks to our main sponsor Forbo Flooring and support from Fáilte Ireland, Leitrim County Council and, once again from Leitrim Development Company, we are able to make Green-Door Leitrim happen again.

Green Door Leitrim

'A unique opportunity to visit amazing architecture and design in homes and buildings around Co. Leitrim."

This event showcased some of the amazing architecture and creativity that Leitrim has tucked away in its beautiful landscape. This second Green-Door weekend was another opportunity for people from anywhere to come to Leitrim and have a fantastic weekend of architecture-based activities laid on for them:

  • Home and building visits available for around 30 properties across the county
  • Meet the architects and builders
  • Learn from home owner's experiences
  • Share your own knowledge
  • Architecture-themed films and exhibitions

Visitors came away with a cultural experience that is based of facts and reality yet also full of inspiration for the future of architecture and rural living.

Here we drew together Leitrim’s artistic hubs of excellence: The Dock, the Leitrim Sculpture Centre and Cinema North West helped to highlight and celebrate its more hidden treasures of architects and architecture that, in many cases, are at the forefront of building for the future in Ireland.

Around 30 homes/buildings were open over the weekend to the public, some bookable, others on a first come first served basis, but most were free. There were tours by architects and designers such as Dominic Stevens, Gordon Ryan and Colin Bell and also by the self-builders and some material suppliers.

In addition, other architecture/building-led events as well as a children's green building activity took place.
