Noeleen Tyrrell - Ard Nahoo

LMN21

INSPIRATION

Noeleen had a clinic in Sligo for her holistic practice for 4 years but knew then that she wanted to develop her own office and practice space. Moved to Dromahair in 1994 and bought the Ard Nahoo site in 1995 with two cottages and 3 acres.  Was advised to knock them but decided to renovate instead. They extended the house to make rooms upstairs and built a small treatment room for Noeleen’s practice.  As the retreat took off they decided to build a yoga room and cabins for self-catering accommodation. They asked Peter Cowman to come up with ideas for them.  After several ideas they all agreed on the yoga room, attached to the reception and treatment rooms and the cottages as 3 separate buildings.

TYPE OF HOUSE

Eco-retreat and family home. Renovated stone cottage and new timber frame buildings.

POINT OF INTEREST

Original cottages have been renovated and the rest of the buildings are timber. As an eco-retreat everything was carefully considered in terms of the environment before it was used.

ECO ELEMENTS

• Timber framed (Irish)
• Cedar clad (Donegal)
• Hemp insulated
• Heated with pellet stoves
• Finished with natural paints
• Powered by Airtricity.
• Built with minimal concrete and no petro chemicals

CREATIVE ELEMENTS

To create a place that people want to holiday and where eco-friendly also means comfortable, easy and relaxing.  The setting within the Leitrim landscape and attention to the surrounds in terms of lawn, trees, pond and gardens give the place a uniquely relaxing feel.

  • Vegetable garden.
  • Nature trail.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Planning: No Problem, hidden away
  • Time scale: A gradual building up of the business meant that elements finished at different times. They moved into their home (the stone cottage) after one year. They had to move in when wasn’t finished because of the money, so lived in the amongst the building work. Retreat opened in 2001. Yoga room opened in 2007, cabins in 2008
  • Anything you would have done differently? Made it bigger, bigger home building and bigger yoga room. Would like a centralised heating system. ie. geothermal or such like.
  • Satisfaction rating: Very happy with retreat. Own home is too small for a growing family.
