INSPIRATION

Anthony works for the OPW as a thatcher and moved to Leitrim for permanent work with them.  Lived in the village of Dromahair whilst he and Soraya looked for somewhere to live.  Bought and began to renovate this cottage in 2008. Put  a modern extension onto the old cottage – the roof on the extension is tin and is married into the thatch at the back of the cottage. Thatched it himself.  Moved in in august 2010 though there are still bits to do.

TYPE OF HOUSE

Renovation of an old cottage with an extension.

POINT OF INTEREST

Huge knowledge of thatching including how to grow the different thatch materials.

ECO ELEMENTS

  • Renovation of an old cottage. Wanted to be as eco as possible but as they were tied in with the bank and a mortgage they could only get a loan if they did what the builder had  proposed; which was a concrete band around the top of the old cottage to tie it in with the extension. Very frustrated by having his hands tied on this one and not having the opportunity to try the ethe more traditional and eco way he wanted to build.
  • Thatch roof - use of indigenous materials and has huge insulation properties.
  • Lime rendering on the inside walls

CREATIVE ELEMENTS

Anthony’s interest stems from his experience and knowledge of the craft of thatching and the historical importance of preserving the craft. Very knowledgeable about all kinds of thatch: growing, harvesting and using. Old cottage hardly touched, new extension full of light
